THE FOOD
Somehow, even when they’re slammed, they manage to cook everything perfectly! The fish is always tender and juicy, the ribs fall off the bone, and everything comes out hot.
We were told we had to try the crab pizza and that it was life-changing. We had, and though our lives didn’t change, we will be back to have it again. Very good food!

THE AMBIANCE
With high ceilings, decorated walls of art, and other fun Upcountry pieces, HaliiMaile General Store has that feeling of being home. It’s warm and inviting with no trace of pretension.
THE SERVICE
We’ve always had polite and friendly service with timely attention to detail.
THE DRINKS
The Cocktails are good at Haliimaile General Store. They have pretty traditional Mai Tais, though Tommy Bahama’s still beats them in the drink department.
THE CHEF
Beverly Gannon has won recognition for her culinary pursuits, enough so to attract the attention of Oprah. Oprah uses her as a chef when she’s visiting her home in Hana.
Bev is the owner of the Seawatch as well and her husband Joe owns and runs Joe’s. They seem to constantly put together the perfect recipe for successful restaurants. Haliimaile, in our opinion, is the best of the three.
Bev is also the Executive Director of onboard dining for Hawaiian Airlines.
THE LOCATION
Haliimaile Road is kind of in the middle of nowhere. It’s on the way to Upcountry towns like Makawao and Kula but isn’t really near much other than fields. When visiting the General Store for dinner or lunch, we suggest making a day of it and checking out the views and great shopping of the Upcountry.
It’s also advisable to stop here when traveling back to the South or West on the backside of Haleakala after taking The Road to Hana.

Had a screamin Hoisin rack of lamb with 5 spice demi ( or vice versa:) some 20 yrs. ago…and worked at Mama’s…both were unique in their own way and you can’t really cross-compare!

Don’t waste your time here, the prices are over the top and the food is nothing special. If you want to spend money and are in this area go to Mama’s Fish House.

The hype for this place is huge due to Bev Gannon’s high profile as Oprah’s chef and all the hats she wears around Maui (figurately.) It’s a good restaurant with a fun atmosphere and good food, but if your expectations are built up, you may be disappointed.
